Rosslyn Chapel HistoryRosslyn Chapel, is a 15th Century church in the village of Roslin, near Edinburgh. The chapel was designed by William Sinclair and construction of the chapel began in 1440, and completed in 1480. 19th century excavations suggest that the chapel was intended to form part of a larger structure, building of which was halted when William Sinclair died. Some authors believe that the Chapel's west wall is a model of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem although the existing chapel most closely resembles the East Quire of Glasgow Cathedral. The Chapel is famous for the Apprentice Pillar and the Master Pillar which have distinct carvings. The Da Vinci CodeThe chapel is famous for its possible connections to Freemasonry and Masonic rituals. Rosslyn is referred to in the book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, by Baigent, Leigh and Lincoln and most famously in Dan Browns The Da Vinci Code for its links to the Holy Grail. Certain points in the chapels architecture are allegedly indicative of a Masonic, and Templar, connection. And for this reason Freemasons from all over the world visit the chapel. The Holy GrailBecause of Rosslyns supposed connections with Freemasonry it is
rumoured that the chapel is one of the possible final resting places of
The Holy Grail. St Clair legend suggests that there are three large medieval
chests buried somewhere on the property, and various theories exist as
to the chests' possible contents. However past scanning and excavations
in or near the Chapel have failed locate any buried treasure. Although
sealed chambers under the basement of the chapel, have yet to be excavated
for fear of collapsing the entire structure.
