Places To VisitThere is loads to see and do when you stay at the Abington Hotel. BiggarBiggar is 12 miles from Abington on the A702 and is an attractive market town with lots of local shops, cafes and pubs. Places of interest to visit include the Moat Park Heritage Centre, the Gasworks Museum, and the Gladstone Court Centre. Visitors used to flock to the town in Victorian times to sample the waters from the three spas at Archbank, Garpol and Hartfell. The Moffat Hydrophathic Hospital was sadly destroyed by fire but the town is still a fantastic place to visit. The Museum of Lead MiningThe Museum of Lead Mining is situated in the heart of the village of Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest Village 1531 feet above sea level. The Museum is unique in Scotland as the only former lead mine open to the public and tells the story of the Scottish lead mining industry. New Lanark World Heritage SiteNew Lanark World Heritage Site, is a beautifully restored 18th century cotton mill village just outside Lanark close to the Falls of Clyde and less than 30 minutes from Abington. Made famous by Robert Owen who was mill manager from 1800 to1825. New Lanark is the birth place of 19th century socialism. For more information click here... Tinto HillTinto Hill or 'hill of fire' is the highest hill in Lanarkshire and is less than 10 minutes from Abington. Follow the A73 towards Lanark and turn left at the Tinto Hill tea room - parking is available 200m along the farm track. The climb to the top of Tinto Hill at 711m makes for a great day out and takes up to 2 hours on good paths. The summit provides fantastic views across of the Scottish Borders, Ayrshire, the Isle of Arran, Glasgow, Ben Lomond, and towards the Pentland Hills and Edinburgh. Stout footwear and warm clothing are recommended.
