Napoleons Chair

Abington Hotel - Napolean's Chair

The chair that was sat on by Prince Louis Napoloeon, French Emperor to be(at the time), who arrived in 1839 is still present in the hotel to this date.

Had you travelled by stage coach on the hazardous Carlisle-Glasgow route in the 1800's you would certainly have appreciated the hospitality and warmth of the Abington Coaching Inn - just as Napoleon III did in 1839 when he rested there on his way to the Eglington Tournaments.

He stayed the night at the Abington Hotel after a wet and tiring day grouse shooting on nearby moors. No sitting rock was available for him so he took supper beside the kitchen fire before retiring to bed. He left on foot early next morning on his way to Eglington Tournament in Edinburgh.
