Clyde, currently Europe’s biggest single consented wind farm, is located between Abington, Biggar and Moffat in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The site is divided by the M74 running between Abington, Elvanfoot and Crawford. The operator of the site is SSE (Scottish and Southern Electricity) who took over from the original owner, Airtricity. Many international contractors such as Siemens, Schneider Electrical and C A Blackwell (Contracts) Ltd operate at the site.
The wind farm represents an investment of £500m, with over £200m of contracts awarded to Scottish based businesses. More than 200 construction jobs are due to be created over the lifetime of the project with 30 jobs to operate and maintain the site. The Clyde Wind Farm will have a capacity of 350MW which will be able to power 279,000 homes based on household consumption of 3,300kWh a year.
The “green light” for the project was given by the Scottish Government in 2008. Prior to speaking to the World Renewable Energy Congress conference, the First Minister, Alex Salmond said of the project “The Clyde Wind Farm will represent a very important step in the development of renewable energy in Scotland and in meeting shared European targets. It is another step towards making Scotland the green energy capital of Europe.
“The Scottish Government has an ambitious target to generate 31 per cent of Scotland’s electricity demand from renewable sources by 2011 and 50 per cent by 2020. Today’s announcement makes it virtually certain that the 2011 target will be met early and exceeded by the end of this Parliamentary term and represents a significant milestone on the way to achieving the 2020 target. Scotland has a clear, competitive advantage in developing clean, green energy sources such as wind, wave and tidal power”.
On the 11th October 2011, it was announced that SSE Renewables has submitted an application for an extension to the consented Clyde wind farm. The extension will be located in the Upper Clyde Valley, surrounding Camps Reservoir only 8 miles from the Abington Hotel, with a nominal capacity up to 171MW. SSE Renewables submitted a Section 36 application and accompanying Environmental Statement for Clyde Extension Wind Farm to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit on 10 October 2011. The final design for the proposal comprises of 57 turbines and ancillary infrastructure.
At present, the largest wind farm in Europe is Whitelee Wind Farm and is located on Eaglesham Moor just 20 minutes from central Glasgow. The wind farm has 140 turbines which can generate 322MW of electricity, enough to power 180,000 homes.
