More Information on BiggarBiggar is a historic town on the A702 between Abington and Edinburgh. The A702 through Biggar still follows the line of the Roman Road linking the Clyde Valley with the Roman fort at Musselburgh. Biggar Kirk was built in 1164 and the Biggar Burn was bridged in the 11th century. The town received its Royal Charter in 1451. A school was established in 1608 and the railway arrived in 1860 but unfortunately closed in the 1950s. The Biggar Gas Works was established in 1836 and has now been converted into a museum. Biggar offers a number of other museums including the Moat Park Heritage Centre, the Albion Motors Museum, the Greenhill Covenanters' Museum, the Puppet Museum and the Gladstone Court Museum. Gala day happens every summer when a Fleming Queen is crowned in Biggar. The "reign" of the Fleming Queen during Gala Week is a historic tradition in Biggar. Ever since Mary Queen of Scots named Mary Fleming (her cousin and lady-in-waiting) "Queen for a Day" in 1563, a local girl has been selected to be the Fleming Queen. Just 15 minutes from the Abington Hotel, Biggar retains many interesting locally-run shops, pubs and restaurants and is a great place for an afternoon browsing and sightseeing.
